INTERVIEW

How do you feel about participating in the BANPRESTO WORLD FIGURE COLOSSEUM 2018?

Last time I won the grand prize because of everyone’s support. As the defending champion, what I'd like to say is “Bring it on!" but honestly, I’m frightened… But I’ll try my best anyways! So... “Bring it on!!!”

Of all the art forms, why did you pick sculpting or become a sculptor?

While I was studying at art university, I ran into Mr. Keisuke Sawada, who was a freelance model sculptor. That was my opportunity to know about sculpting as a job. I was attracted to his molding, which made me say “Cool!” with just his work. After I graduated university, I started to study under his tutorship. I’ve studied techniques and the minds of sculpting. I think all my current work is based on it.

How do you feel about the franchise for which you selected? (Dragon Ball or One Piece)

One Piece is so fun and I really like it. I’m attracted to the type of man Luffy is as well as the Straw Hat Crew. I hope my son will read the comic books someday.

Tell us the reason why you chose the character you did. (And why did you pose it that way?).

Well first of all he’s a main character, and I want to model a cool hero. There are tons of Luffy figures out in the world, so I needed to come up with a different concept. I chose this Luffy from the frontispiece. As this is a world competition, I want to win the grand prize with Japanese style Luffy!!!

What makes your style of sculpting unique?

Though I’ve participated in this competition several times, it’s always hard to decide what to do… Especially this time. But finally I have decided to go with Japanese style design. I like making precise details in the molding process. Please check out my Japanese sword, Karakasa, kimono and so on!

If you were a Dragon Ball or One Piece character who would you be? And why?

It’s not who I would be, but I admire Paulie. I like him because he has pride as a craftsman. I see a real man in him.

How do you feel about the other contestants?

More participants will be joining this year’s contest from all over the world. Different countries, processes, techniques of sculpting and so on… Either digital or hand sculpting, there are many processes of sculpting with various senses. I’m so excited to see the kind of works which might be beyond my imagination. As a Japanese sculptor, I’m nervous and excited about how my skills will be accepted there.

Is there anything you like to say to your fans?

I’m not sure if I have fans, but to the “BWFC” fans, BWFC participants have unexpected skills, expressions, and senses that will compete in this competition. Lots of great sculpting will be gathered from all over the world there. I hope you will enjoy the competition with me! I hope for your continuous support!!! “I’m gonna be the king of the sculptors!!!”
