HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT PARTICIPATING IN THE BANPRESTO WORLD FIGURE COLOSSEUM?

RP: I’m very excited! I never would have imaged that one day I would have the opportunity to be part of the Tournament. I’m a huge Dragon Ball and One Piece fan and I have been collecting DBZ and OP figures for years and every year I follow closely the Banpresto events. To have the chance to be part of it would be such an honor as a fan but also as an artist as for me the artists working with Banpresto and the best in the world at doing DBZ and OP figures.

TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND AS A CREATOR:

RP: I have been working in the video game industry for 14 years and I have been focusing on making 3D characters for 11 years now. I also have been doing statues of comic book characters for companies like Icon Studios or more recently Prime 1 Studios.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FEELINGS TOWARDS DRAGON BALL?

RP: Dragon Ball has been running for over 30 years now and I have been a fan ever since I first discovered it when I was a young teenager. I grew up with these characters, I evolved along them and I even now have a huge DBZ toy collection at home! The design of Dragon Ball is unique, so recognizable, it’s stylized while keeping a strong sense of anatomy and all the characters are unique and memorable. I’m still surprised that my girlfriend is not getting tired of seeing me buy DBZ toys, read DBZ manga, play DBZ games and make 3D DBZ characters in my spare time 🙂

PLEASE EXPLAIN A PRODUCT, WORK, ETC. IN WHICH YOU WERE INVOLVED THAT HAS A SPECIAL PLACE IN YOUR HEART.

RP: I have done a lot of work for companies but I think that the 3 pieces that were the most special to me are my Thanos 3D head, my Phoenix Colossus model and my Kami 3D model. Thanos because I did it 2 years before the release of the movie Avengers and at that time nobody had ever done a good Thanos 3D model (to my taste) so I did my own version and got a lot of praise for it. The same happened for my Phoenix Colossus model but this time I also got it printed as a statue and I was very happy and proud of the result. Serge Birault, an amazing artist, was a big fan of my Phoenix Colossus model and it was great to see him so happy when I gave him a colored statue of my model and it made me very proud. And my Kami model because it got Banpresto to contact me for this contest.

WHAT DO YOU VALUE AS A CREATOR? WHAT ARE YOUR OWN RULES FOR CREATING?

RP: Simplicity, energy and efficacy is what I value the most. A good and memorable design doesn’t need to be covered in details or splattered with tons of effects. A good creator can convey an intention or a feeling with very few elements. But it is actually the hardest thing to achieve. Accuracy and simplicity are the hardest thing to do when creating something and only comes from year and years of practice and observation. A lot of artist add tons of details to their work simply to mask their mistakes but most of these work are being forgotten the next day. Dragon Ball , One Piece, Street fighter (just to name a fun) all combine simple design, all true to the personality of the characters, with memorable color codes and a lot of energy in the silhouettes and/or in the pose, and they all are characters that resonate and stay in people’s mind.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE CHARACTER IN ANIME, COMICS, ETC.?

RP: Vegeta (DBZ), Piccolo (DBZ), Kami (DBZ), Krillin (DBZ), Whitebeard (OP), Marco (OP), Jinbe (OP), Crocodile (OP), Aokiji (OP), Ikki (saint-Seiya), Shiryu (Saint-Seiya), Raoh (Hokuto no Ken), Rei (KEN The Great Bear Fist) Colossus (X-men), Wolverine (X-men), NightCrawler (Excalibur), Captain Britain (Excalibur), Thor (Marvel), Batman (DC), Hulk (marvel), Tenshin Han (DBZ), Chaoz (DBZ), Nappa (DBZ), Bardock (DBZ) Ace (OP), Hellboy, Frieza (DBZ), Cell (DBZ), Urouge (OP), Gemini (saint-Seiya), Asuka (Evangelion) Tetsuo (akira), Tiger (tiger and bunny), Trafalgar. Law (OP), C16 (DBZ)

WHAT IS YOUR IMPRESSION OF JAPANESE FIGURES OR CREATORS?

RP: To me they are the best at making Anime figures. They are able to translate the 2D style of any anime in 3D in an impressive and accurate way. I’m a very impressed by the work of Manabu Yamashita, Varoq and Hiroyuki Nakazawa. Their work on DBZ and OP is to me the best and they are able to give life to all my favorite anime characters. Every time I look at their statues on my shelves it makes me smile 🙂

HOW IS YOUR ENTHUSIASM FOR PARTICIPATING IN THE BFC? TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR FEELINGS TOWARDS SCULPTING?

RP: I’m so excited! just being considered for this contest made me so happy, and it would be one of my biggest achievement to be part of it. I want to do my best work for this contest and when I think that maybe a lot of Dragon Ball fans around the world could look at a DBZ figure that I made and think”yeah, it looks just like the anime” and make them smile while looking at it, this would be one a the greatest reward I could hope for.
